Blog ID: 1269 - Predator Poisons for Farmers - 2008-01-24
I’m not sure if anyone else is familiar with these predator poisons, but I was reading a news article today regarding poisons used to protect livestock from wild animals. There are two poisons used. The first predator poison is an M-44, which is a sodium cyanide-based device that is put in the ground. It has bait designed to attract predators but apparently not livestock.

Then the other predator poison is Compound 1080. It’s strapped to the livestock (sheep and goats) and is composed of sodium fluoroacetate. These predator poisons are distributed by the Wildlife Services Agency. Apparently these poisons are a humane way to kill predatory animals.

My personal opinion on these predator poisons is to ban them. I understand the issue of protecting our livestock, but there has to be some other way. I personally had never heard of these predator poisons until today. There was a man in Utah who touched an M-44 in 2003 and the poison sprayed in his face. To this day his health has been affected and he vomits almost every day! That could’ve been me. I have no clue what these things look like.

My husband and I love the outdoors and our two dogs go with us everywhere. Jayda, our Weimaraner, is always running ahead and into things since she’s young and full of energy. I could definitely see her being interested in these M-44 predator poisons in the ground. These predator poisons could easily kill her!

Not only for the safety of our domestic animals and ourselves, but also for all wildlife I think these predator poisons should be done away with.

Blog ID: 1198 - Montana Avalanche - 2008-01-17
Many of you guys have probably already heard about the two backcountry skiers who were killed in the avalanche in Montana. Very unfortunate and I do send my condolences. The avalanche took place in the northwestern part of Montana on Sunday near the Whitefish Mountain Resort. They recovered the bodies Tuesday afternoon but are still looking for two others that were thought to be buried in the avalanche also. But it sounds like to me that the eyewitnesses may be incorrect about seeing two others. Nobody has been reported missing. Do you think that they should keep looking for the skiers? I don’t think so. There’s been no reports of anyone missing from any nearby hotels, resorts etc. Sounds to me like somebody saw something wrong. Seems like a lot of money and time to waste on something that seems so uncertain. If these two skiers were buried in the avalanche, it seems that they are just looking for bodies anyway. And the route to the avalanche site is quite the trip, a 14-mile ride by snowmobile. Not only that, you have to take into consideration the safety of the searchers at the avalanche site. So in my opinion, they should just call the search off.
